Homework 6

Microsoft Excel is a powerful spreadsheet programs. It allows you to input formulas and graph data sets among many other options.

Part I - 50pts

  • Copy the file HW6_race_data.xlsx located in the common/assignments/6 folder of the E 115 course locker and save it to your computer.

Today is the big race day. There is the sound of engines, the smell of gas and tires. Everyone is exited, but suddenly there is trouble. The race broadcasting equipment has gone out, and now the viewers at home have no idea how the race is going to play out. Luckily all the cars are installed with accelerometers, and the data is written into an excel sheet every second. Your job is going to be filling the rest of the info in the excel sheet so viewers will know how the race played out. The information you need to know to complete the excel sheet is listed below.

  • There are 5280 feet in 1 mile.
  • There are 3600 seconds in 1 hour.
  • One lap around the race track is 1.25 miles.

After filling in the velocity and distance information, you will need to do the following.

  • Name the worksheet Race Data.
  • Find the average velocities of the 3 cars.
  • Find the highest velocity, and give the corresponding cell in the list of velocities a red background.
  • Find the lowest velocity, and give the corresponding cell in the list of velocities a blue background.
  • Highlight the entire row where the winning car passes the 1 lap mark.

Part II - 50pts

  • Copy the file HW6_gradebook.xls located in the common/assignments/6 folder of the E 115 course locker and save it to your computer.

An unpleasant task for any teacher is maintaining the grades for his/her students. Students themselves wish that such archaic and confining devices didn't exists to monitor their performance and have ultimate rule over their academic fate. For this portion of the assignment, you will write formulas to auto complete portions of an instructors grade book.

  • Name the cells containing the weighted percentages to use, and use them in all your formulas appropriately.
  • Calculate the Homework and Quiz Average for each student.
  • Calculate the Final Grade for each student. The final grade is the addition of the percentage weights for each of the major areas. For instance, the Homework Average of a student would make up 15% of that student's final grade.
  • Calculate the class Average Grade, Minimum Grade, and Maximum Grade for each assignment listed.
  • Save as a .xlsx document.
