Place Out Exam

How can I "Place-Out" of E 115?

A score of 75% or higher on the E 115 place-out exam is required to receive credit by examination for E 115.

Who is eligible to take the E 115 Place-Out Exam?

Students are permitted to take the place-out exam once.  Students will NOT be admitted to the place-out exam if they have previously:

  • scored less than 75% on the E115 place-out exam
  • received a grade of "U" for E115
  • completed more than 50% of the E115 course

When is the E 115 Place-Out Exam?

The E 115 place-out exam is given once each semester. The next exam will be in January, 14 2009 from 6 pm to 8 pm.

I want to take the E 115 Place-Out Exam.  What do I do next?

YOU MUST REGISTER IN ADVANCE FOR THE E 115 PLACE-OUT EXAM. Students are required to register for the place-out exam through the E 115 Event Registration System http://www.eos.ncsu.edu/e115/ers/ prior to taking the exam.  Students who are NOT registered will NOT be admitted to the exam.

What material is covered on the E 115 Place-Out Exam?

The E 115 place-out exam tests mastery of all material that is covered during the regular semester in E115.  Students should consider taking the place-out exam if they can demonstrate the following:

  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Excel and/or Open Office Calc
  • An understanding of the AFS file system and associated file tree
  • Knowledge of building path names to files and/or directories
  • Usage of basic UNIX terminal-based commands to navigate the AFS file tree
  • Usage of basic UNIX terminal based commands to manipulate files and/or directories in the AFS file tree
  • Ability to identify key computer hardware and associated functionality
  • Knowledge of HTML tags and usage
  • Ability to build simple HTML based web pages using a basic text editor
  • Skills needed to electronically submit files via NCSU’s Wolfware system
  • Successful printing of files via WolfPrint
  • Ability to remotely access files and/or applications including the use of NCSU’s VCL (Virtual Computing Lab)

How do I prepare for the E 115 Place-Out Exam?

To be adequately prepared for the E 115 place-out exam, self-study is required.  This exam includes questions specific to computing at NCSU.  To achieve a passing grade of 75% or better on the exam, we strongly urge students to actively and thoroughly study the concepts contained in the E 115 Online Textbook available at http://www.eos.ncsu.edu/e115/online_text/.

What should I do on the day of the E 115 Place-Out Exam?

To be admitted to the exam, students must:

  • Be registered for an exam time through the E 115 Event Registration System. 
  • Arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled exam time.  Students who arrive more than 30 minutes after their exam time will NOT be admitted to the exam.
  • Show Photo ID
  • Bring a pen or pencil
  • Bring their personal laptop computer if taking the laptop version of the place-out exam

How will I be notified of my E 115 Place-Out Exam score?

Students can find out their score by returning to the E115 Event Registration System after their exam time has ended. A reminder email will be sent as well.

I scored 75% or higher on the Place-Out Exam. What do I do now?

  • If you are currently enrolled in E 115, you must drop E 115 from your schedule immediately via Pack Tracks.  Credit by examination for E 115 will be awarded and appear on your transcript by the end of the semester.
  • If you are NOT currently enrolled in E 115, credit by examination for E 115 will be awarded and appear on your transcript by the end of the semester.


I scored less than 75% on the Place-Out Exam. What do I do now?

Students who scored less than 75% on the E 115 place-out exam are required to take the E 115 course.
