Virtual Office Hours
The purpose of the Virtual Office Hours program is to provide a little extra availability to students riding the waves of the Information Age. Engineers are busy people, and not all of our schedules lend towards getting the help we need. While traditional office hours and email have helped instructors pass information on to students, occasionally a student just has a quick question that shouldn't have to wait a few hours or days to hear back on. Hence, the Virtual Office Hour. The program is designed to handle these quick answers and directions to E115, how to survive as a new engineer, or just as communication with students.
Procedure
The premise of Virtual Office Hours is simple. Along with in-class instruction, office hours, and email, the instructors listed below have volunteered to log in via the AOL Instant Messenger service to help students as needed. This program is fluid in nature. A student simply needs to add the instructors to their buddy lists, and send an instant message containing the needed information.
Hours of Operation
Instructors will not log on at predetermined times, nor is there a guarantee that someone will be online at any given time. Given the size and composition of the group, it is likely that an instructor will be available during normal working hours and into the evenings.
Messaging
When contacting one of the Virtual Office Hour instructors, two important pieces of information are required.
- Section Number
- Question
A prime example of a solid message could look something like this:
Hi. I'm in section 001. I'm having problems with Homework 3. I'm trying to remove the file in question 4, but I had problems understanding removing files in class. Can you help me?
Given the nature of the program, limit your questions to those that can be quickly answered. Questions along the line of: "Can you explain to me how to use the Calc program," are better answered face-to-face with your instructor(s) or during traditional office hours.
Along with content, the composition of your messages needs to be readable. Each of the instructors are well-versed in the internet dialects, but that doesn't mean that students should fall into bad IM habits with 1337speak, dudespeak, or lolspeak. Questions looking like, "wut did i wrng w/ this ? lolz" will quickly earn you the ire of the instructors. The more readable your message, the easier we can answer your questions.
Last Minute Syndrome
College students are creatures of procrastination. We know it. Someone using this service is going to try to use it for last minute answers on Homeworks. That is not the mission of this program. The instructors will not be giving out answers to assignments, but rather helping students work towards the answers. If a student comes to us the day an assignment due for their section, we will point them to the direction of their class instructor.
