Nomad

Nomadic computing, as it is being implemented at NC State, allows any member of the NC State community with an active university computing account to log on to the campus network from anywhere on campus. The nomadic computing architecture accommodates either wired or wireless connections. After connecting to either a nomad Ethernet port or accessing a wireless access point and your computer has acquired its necessary network configuration, the Nomad system steps in to authenticate users to NC State’s network.  When you first open a web browser to access a page, you will be automatically redirected to the Nomad login page.

  • From here you will log into nomadic with your unity name and password
  • If you lose connection or close your laptop for more than 10 minutes you will have to re-authenticate to have access again.
  • If your network connection is idle for more than 2 hours you will have to re-authenticate to have access again.

There are several locations across campus that provide wireless access to the internet.  A complete listing of current available locations as well as coverage areas being worked on can be found at http://wireless.ncsu.edu/maps/index.html.  In addition to making sure you are in a wireless coverage area, make sure your wireless card (either internal or PCMCIA card) is at a minimum 802.11b compliant and your computer has the most up-to-date drivers from the wireless card manufacture.

Device Registration

To avoid having to authenticate to the wireless network everytime you connect, you can register your device (laptop, palm, etc) with the Nomad network. Visit http://nomad.ncsu.edu and click on the Device Registration link on the left. When you register a device it will be able to gain network access immediately without requiring you to sign in using your username and password. Once a device has been registered, it will transparently authenticate itself to the Nomad system using the registration profile that is associated with your account.

You are responsible for all devices that you register. If you loan, misplace, sell, or otherwise lose control of a device that you have registered, it is your responsibility to unregister it immediately. You can unregister a device at any time by returning to http://nomad.ncsu.edu and visiting the Device Registration area.
