Computers for Students with Disabilities

See Assistive Technology @ NC State

for types and locations of assistive technology in labs.

Eos/Unity is a distributed multi-platform and client-server architecture. There are four operating-system platforms that people use as clients on Eos: Sun Solaris (Unix), Red Hat Linux, Microsoft Windows, and Mac OS X (see also Labs).

Student-owned computers are also supported through services delivered by remote access, including access to workstations and campus-licensed software through the Virtual Computing Lab (VCL). Platforms for students with disabilities are available both in engineering and campus facilities (see left and below).

All of these platforms are united by a shared file system (AFS), a common suite of application software, and a variety of hardware and services delivered through the Eos/Unity computing environment.

Sun Solaris (Unix)

Before 1998, Eos was Unix only, running several Unix OSes. Today, Eos has standardized on one Unix operating system: Sun Solaris. Running on Solaris is X Windows, developed in the MIT Athena Project, which uses the X client-server protocol in a multitasking environment. fvwm is the current window manager. More...

Red Hat Linux

The College of Engineering and NCSU partner with Red Hat on the Centennial Campus to make Linux an Eos platform. The graphical operating shell is GNOME, and Sawfish is the window manager. More...

Microsoft Windows

Unix and Linux are secure and powerful platforms, but they have not been able to provide all of the applications that users want. The Microsoft Windows platform has brought substantial application software to Eos. The current supported Windows OS is XP running Novell NetWare and Application Launcher (NAL) and ZENWorks for Desktops. More...

Mac OS X

Macintosh clients are supported by campus ITD services, see http://www.ncsu.edu/mac. They run in ITD labs and have an active user group on campus called PackMug. More ...

Student-Owned Laptops

The College of Engineering supports student-owned computing and laptop purchases with authorized vendors. IBM, Apple, and Dell have laptops that will meet students' needs for non-lab computing. All NCSU faculty and students can purchase on the plan. NCSU also has information to support student-owned computers at, Your own computer at NC State. More...

204 Daniels Hall

There is one Linux station for the visually impaired in Daniels 204. There is also one Wolfprep Windows XP visually impaired workstation in 204 Daniels.

The hostname for the Linux machine is
dan204-58-70.eos.ncsu.edu.

The hostname of the Windows box is
