File Services
Students, faculty and staff in the College of Engineering can acquire additional file space free of charge for administration, research, personal use, workspace for students in engineering courses, and for web sites. Management of these lockers is done through a web-based locker portal.
The following lockers are available. Select the type of locker you want for a description, instructions for use, and online request form.
Non-web AFS Lockers
Administrative (/afs/eos/lockers/admin/deptname/locker/)
Research (/afs/eos/lockers/research/deptname/locker/)
Course Workspace (/afs/eos/lockers/workspace/deptname/course/section/locker/)
Non-web AFS lockers are located in /afs/eos/lockers/. No web delivery is available from these lockers. Only faculty and staff can request and own these lockers, although students have access to Course Workspace lockers created for them.
Web Lockers
Web (/afs/eos/engrwww/vhost/sites/locker/)
Web lockers are located in /afs/eos/engrwww/ and provide space for the web sites of college organizations, departments, administration, and research. All web sites must be organized under a department domain, or vhost, so web lockers must be requested by the webmaster for that vhost. Only webmasters can request web lockers, but they are owned by faculty and staff. Student organizations and activities can also have web sites if there is a faculty or staff sponsor/owner.) Web space for courses is handled through Wolfware (also WebCT).
Personal Lockers
Personal (/afs/eos/lockers/people/a-z/unityid/; http://people.engr.ncsu.edu/unityid/)
Personal lockers are composed of two internal lockers, private and www:
- Non-web AFS file space (/afs/eos/lockers/people/a-z/unityid/private/), meant to supplement the user's Unity sccount AFS space, provided by the university.
- Web space (/afs/eos/lockers/people/a-z/unityid/www/), for user web sites delivered from http://people.engr.ncsu.edu/unityid/, with access to dynamically enabled web hosting, PHP, and an optional MySQL database.
COE students, faculty, and staff can request and own personal lockers.
Locker Management
Managing locker access and quota at the command line is archane and time-consuming. A web tool has been created for this purpose, so running fs and pts commands from the command line is NOT required or recommended. If you are the locker owner, a list of the lockers you own and instructions for adding and removing people to/from groups are at locker portal site at http://www.eos.ncsu.edu/lockers/portal/. You can also request additional quota and perform other routine locker-maintenance tasks.
What is a Locker?
A locker is a logically collected set of AFS volumes with its own quota and access control list (ACL). Paths to lockers always begin with /afs (on Windows lab and administrative computers, /afs is mapped to the J: drive). However, locker paths branch into different parts of the AFS file tree depending on how the locker needs to be configured for use. For example, web-locker space is configured for access by web servers, whereas non-web AFS space is not.
Engineering lockers are in /afs/eos/lockers/ and /afs/eos/engrwww/ and supported by ITECS. Wolfware course lockers are also in /afs/eos/courses/ but supported by ITD and DELTA, not Engineering, so contact wolfware AT help.ncsu.edu. More information can be found in the PDF documents below:
