Welcome Back! Fall 2002 Updates in the Labs

Summer 2002 has been busy with upgrades to lab software, operating systems, and workstations. These updates and other information are documented here at the Eos web site, which was also overhauled this summer.

Workstations

90 new Sun Blades running Solaris 8 and 85 new Dell Precision workstations running Windows 2000 and Red Hat Linux 7.3 have replaced older computers throughout the labs. Read-writable CD and 250 zip drives are on all new Dells for improved external storage of user data.

Sun Blades in Eos labs have the enhanced Expert 3D Light graphics card. Sun Blades in Unity labs have the standard on-board graphics. Sun does not support zip drives in their computers. However, campus ITD services bought and is testing PC zip drives on the Suns, installing them in Unity labs. As a result, students can use Unity Sun Blades for zip storage.

See Labs and Platforms and Eos Labs for equipment location and details.

Operating Systems

All three supported platforms had operating-system upgrades over the summer: Red Hat Linux 7.1 to 7.3, Windows NT to 2000, and Solaris 7 to 8. While OS upgrades improve the system overall and make the installation of new software possible, inevitably, there are unsupported software packages and old versions that break and must be taken off the system. Eos/Unity is set up to run the most current versions of software and operating systems, so write to help@ncsu.edu if you have questions about the support of any software or service.

Application Software

New applications and version upgrades are numerous. Among the new packages are OPNET Network Modeler for Solaris and Windows, AVR Studio, Moldflow, SURFCAM, and Office XP for Windows, and Together Control Center for Windows and Linux.

Windows 2000 with Novell Zenworks 3.2 is running in Eos Windows labs, and many applications had to be altered to work with the new operating environment. Similarly, Solaris 8 required many changes to get applications to run well.

The following versions of software are available this fall on the Windows platform, and on Solaris and Linux platforms where noted. More information about these applications is at http://www.eos.ncsu.edu/software/apps.html
