Student-Owned Computing Faculty Forum: Teaching the Teachers

by Jeff Joines, Assistant Professor, Textile Engineering
Chair, SOC Faculty Forum

In the past two years, the College of Engineering Student-Owned Computing Task Force has met its objectives of launching a student-owned platform and support, see http://www.eos.ncsu.edu/soc/. The group is therefore changing its name and direction to keep the initiative alive and flourishing.

Professors and instructors both inside and outside the College of Engineering require collaboration and assistance to adopt the use of student-owned computing in their classrooms. The goal of the new SOC Faculty Forum is to provide this help to anyone interested in using this technology in the classroom.

Two kickoff forums have been planned for this fall and a third for spring. The first forum presents two case studies of very successful uses of technology in the classroom. Carol Miller and Anna Kennedy will talk about how they have used the technology and what impact it has had on their teaching, students, and classroom.

The second forum features Rebecca Brent and Rich Felder and their perspectives on teaching with technology. Using laptops in a classroom requires a teaching pedagogy different from traditional teacher-centered and lectured-based instruction. They will discuss how active learning with technology can enhance student learning.

Come October 29 to learn how instructors are using the technology in a traditional engineering computer course and a non-traditional Spanish course. Then attend November 20 to learn from the experts about active learning with technology.

The spring April 23 forum is a hands-on demonstration of laptop computing tools. Participants will learn how a variety of tools (Ask the Audience, Wolfware, WebCT, WebAssign) can be used in a student-centered classroom. Throughout the forum, participants will be working with the tools on laptops from our new laptop cart, made available by ITECS for classroom use.

Please bring along your lunch. Drinks will be provided.
