A new host for delivering the web sites of engineering student organizations,
including department honoraries and professional societies, has been launched
at http://students.engr.ncsu.edu/
The site will be managed by the Engineers' Council, http://students.engr.ncsu.edu/e-council/
In order to provide better web service and security, ITECS is moving web sites out of legacy AFS file space into space that has been configured to operate more effectively. Student organizations in the college can now have the shorter URL, http://students.engr.ncsu.edu/[orgname]/, increased quota for content (100MB), an easier means for managing permissions on the space, and support for WRAP-based authentication and PHP (some restrictions enforced). Engineering student organizations should make plans to move their sites as soon as they can. In most cases, it's just a matter of picking up and moving the site from its current location in AFS to /afs/eos/engrwww/sites/students/[orgname]/. An index.html (or index.htm) file at the new location serves as the organization's home page at http://students.engr.ncsu.edu/[orgname]/. When your organization is ready to move, have your faculty sponsor request the locker from eoshelp@ncsu.edu. Included in that email should be the names of the student "web editors" who need write access to the space. When the locker is created, these editors can either *copy the complete site from old to new space; or Be aware that your site may have some broken links after the move if it used symlinks, CGI, or absolute path references to site files. ITECS can provide you with a webtest.engr.ncsu.edu URL for testing the site before going live (required if you are using PHP). When the site is ready to publish, contact ITECS to apply the new URL. In all of the Eos and Unity Windows labs are easy tools for creating web sites: Macromedia Dreamweaver, Flash, and Fireworks and Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat. See http://www.eos.ncsu.edu/software/ for more information on these and other applications. If you are working in these applications in the labs, you can simply save files you create into live web space via the J:(afs) drive -> eos -> engrwww -> sites -> students -> [orgname]. If you intend to use PHP and WRAP at your site, please contact ITECS first to learn what the restrictions are and how best to implement them. Feel free to contact ITECS with any of your questions, and we will try to make this move as smooth as we can. We hope these new standards and resources will provide engineering student organizations with more reliable web service and a better overall presence on the web. Note: Organizations who deliver from the campus SORC at http://www.ncsu.edu/stud_orgs/ do not need to move but are welcome to.
